Iron
Five percent of the earth’s crust is made up of iron, making this element the fourth most common on the planet – after oxygen, silicon and aluminum. Iron ore is extracted from both open-pit and underground mines, primarily in Brazil, Australia, China, Russia and India. It has been mined for around 4000 years and is nowadays the most frequently used industrial metal.
As the most important precursor material for products made of steel alloys, iron is also the most important metal for Geberit. Steel is often subjected to a plating process with chrome, nickel or zinc to improve the finish of the final product. At Geberit, for example, iron is used in installation elements and piping systems.
